5 Ways You're Sabotaging Your Workout
Behavior is said to be self-sabotaging when it creates problems and interferes with long-standing goals. Of course, none of us set out to sabotage our workout routines, but it happens. What’s worse, is that it may be happening and you don’t even realize it. How do you fix a problem that you didn’t even know existed? Keep reading to learn about a few of the most common things you may be doing that can lead to the downfall of your fitness goals. The first step is admitting you have a problem, right?
1. You’re Irregular
No, not THAT kind of irregularity. We’re talking about your workout schedule. We all know that life can get crazy busy and some days just fall apart at the seams, one of the easiest ways to make sure you get your workout in is to make it a regular part of your routine. Whether you’re exercising every day, or three times a week, find a time that works best for you and is least likely to pushed back by meetings that run long or long school pick-up lines. Make it part of your schedule just like waking up and showering, or getting the kids to soccer practice. The regularity of knowing that you’ll be at 9Round from 6 – 6:30 every morning will make it much easier, and give you some “me time” to look forward to!
2. You Go Too Hard
Yes, it’s a thing. It’s easy to get a little overzealous with our workouts, and it’s tempting to push yourself to the limit in order to get closer to your fitness goals. But this can actually set you back. Pushing your body this hard can lead to injuries that can take you out of the game for extended periods of time and wreck your momentum. And even if you don’t injure yourself, being this intense with your workout can lead to psychological burnout. 9Round trainers, with assistance from 9Round’s PULSE® heart rate technology, will make sure that you are performing your workouts with maximum safety and effectiveness. They’ll also help keep you motivated and on-track if you start to feel that mental exhaustion creeping in.
3. You’re Bored
While consistency is important in terms of the “when” of your workout, variety can be important in terms of the workout you do. If you ate pizza for dinner every night, you’d eventually get bored, right? Okay, bad example. Kale salad? Yeah, we thought so. Performing the same exercises, running the same route, listening to the same playlist every day gets old…fast. This is why the 9Round workout changes every single day of every single week. You don’t get bored repeating the same moves every time, and your muscles don’t get bored and slow your progress on your way to meeting your fitness goals. Variety is the spice of life.
4. You Need a Timeout
A technology timeout. These days, we’re constantly connected. That can be great in a lot of ways, but it can also get in the way of our fitness goals. Responding to texts, emails and social media notifications is totally distracting and you definitely aren’t focused on making this your best workout. And if you only have 30 minutes for exercise each day, spending five of those minutes on your phone can have a real impact over time. Our advice? Leave your phone in the car, or put it on airplane mode while you’re in the gym. You can’t text wearing boxing gloves anyway.
5. You’re Sleepy
As we all know, when we’re lacking sleep, it can be difficult to muster the motivation to do, well, just about anything, let alone go to the gym. (We see all of you sleep-deprived people nodding your heads!) It can be very tempting to hit the snooze and sleep for another 20 minutes, rather than getting up and working out. We get it. Sleep is important. If mornings have never been your thing, or you spend your nights wrestling with a tiny human who gets three naps a day and doesn’t care if you’re tired, morning workouts probably aren’t for you. And that’s okay. Pick another time of day to get your sweat on.
Another sleep-related workout woe is the fact that not getting enough of it can result in a decrease in the hormone related to protein synthesis and muscle recovery after exercise. If you’re not getting enough sleep, your workouts are likely to be less effective, and you’ll find it more difficult to build muscle. Just another way you’re sabotaging your workout without even realizing.
